UN chief calls for action over foreign support for Sudan war

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has described the situation in Sudan as “absolutely horrible” and called for accountability over countries supplying weapons used in the conflict.

Speaking ahead of next week’s UN General Assembly in New York, Guterres said Sudan’s warring parties are responsible for the fighting but also pointed to the role of foreign powers supplying arms.

“What is happening in Sudan is absolutely horrible. The humanitarian situation in Sudan is devastating. The level of suffering of the Sudanese people is intolerable,” he said on Wednesday.

“In my opinion, there should be accountability for the kind of interference in which some countries provide weapons to parties to a conflict when those weapons are used massively to attack civilians.”

Several countries have been accused of providing military or other support to the rival sides in Sudan’s war, which began in April 2023.

On Tuesday, Massad Boulos, US President Donald Trump’s senior adviser for Arab and Middle Eastern affairs, said neither of Sudan’s two rival generals should have a political role in the country’s future.

“We see a future in the civilian transition. It needs to happen quickly and seamlessly, away from the two warring generals. We support this track only,” Boulos said.

He added that Trump had been “very clear” about Sudan and that addressing the country’s humanitarian crisis remains a US priority.

Sudan’s war began on 15 April 2023 when fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has since spread across the country, forcing millions of people from their homes and triggering a severe humanitarian crisis.
