Airbnb guests will no longer have to wash and put away dishes under new rules issued by the short-term rental service, sparking fury among some Aussie hosts.
According to its community policy update, which applies to reservations booked on or after November 20, 2026, guests generally cannot be asked to complete tasks that require ‘significant effort or time, or that would typically be performed by a cleaner’.
For example, guests generally cannot be asked to wash and put away dishes, strip beds, start a load of laundry or take rubbish off-site.
Hosts can choose from seven standard rules covering maximum overnight guest numbers, quiet hours, events, pets, smoking, commercial photography and locking up at checkout, while also adding requests considered reasonable under the policy.
Requests that do not comply with the new policy may be flagged by Airbnb, with hosts asked to remove them or submit an appeal.
The change has outraged some Australian Airbnb hosts, who claim the new rules unfairly disadvantage them, with one Queensland host taking to social media to share what she described as a ‘simple solution.’
‘No dishes provided. If guests want to use dishes, they can purchase their own. I’m not offering kitchen access,’ the woman wrote on an online forum. ‘They’ll use disposable plates.’
Another woman, who claimed to earn more than $130,000 a year on her Airbnb listing, said she planned to walk away from the platform if she began to find dirty dishes everywhere.
‘I have never charged a cleaning fee and I don’t even ask my guests to sweep the floor but I’ll be f***ed if I’ll accept people leaving dirty dishes,’ she said.
‘When we walk in and find a guest has not put away the dirty dishes we automatically would never want them back in our house. I have to say out of over 1000 guests that I’ve had I’ve only ever had dirty dishes left a handful of times.
‘Why should people come into my beautiful home and leave their dirty dishes lying around?’
Another host said: ‘It’s creating [licence] for guests to leave a place in utter chaos with food waste attracting vermin and there’s nothing we can do about it.’
The changes have also angered some overseas hosts, several of whom vowed to leave the platform.
One US-based host shared a screenshot that appeared to suggest the new rules prevented hosts from asking guests to pick up dog poo, although this was not specified in Airbnb’s published guidance.
Another US-based host said: ‘On November 19th I will be shutting down my calendar and once the years out I will be delisting from Airbnb. They are not a host friendly company any longer and we’ll suffer in the long run.’
A third added: ‘I know exactly what [Airbnb is] trying to do, they want us to raise the cleaning fees, so they make more percentage.’
However, others said they were glad Airbnb was cracking down on the ‘ridiculous’ check out rules.
‘I’m sorry, but if I’m paying hundreds of dollars for accommodations AND an additional cleaning fee, why the hell am I stripping beds, doing laundry, and taking out the trash?’ one person said.
‘At that point, I’m basically paying hotel prices to do household chores on vacation.’
Another said: ‘I don’t get how owners can feel comfortable with other people putting on a load of washing.’
Daily Mail has contacted Airbnb for comment.
