Ruto Honours CBK Governor Kamau Thugge on Mashujaa Day for Steering Kenya’s Economic Stability
President William Ruto has honoured Central Bank of Kenya Governor Kamau Thugge for his contribution to economic governance, currency stability and public service during the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations.
Thugge was among the Kenyans recognised for their contribution to the country’s development as the national celebrations took place at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, on Tuesday, October 20.
The recognition highlights the role played by the CBK governor in supporting Kenya’s economic stability and strengthening confidence in the country’s financial system.
According to the National Heroes Council’s 2026 recognition, Thugge was honoured for his distinguished contribution to economic governance and his leadership in promoting economic resilience.
Thugge’s recognition comes at a time when Kenya continues to navigate economic challenges, including the cost of living, pressure on household incomes and the need to sustain economic growth.
As the head of the Central Bank of Kenya, Thugge oversees an institution responsible for formulating and implementing monetary policy, maintaining price stability and supporting the stability of the country’s financial system.
The CBK also plays a key role in managing currency-related matters, supervising commercial banks and influencing the cost of borrowing through monetary policy decisions.
These responsibilities place the governor at the centre of decisions that affect businesses, investors and ordinary Kenyans.
The National Heroes Council cited Thugge’s contribution to strengthening economic stability and resilience, noting that his leadership had helped restore confidence in the banking sector and support sustainable economic growth.
Thugge became the tenth governor of the Central Bank of Kenya on June 19, 2023, bringing extensive experience in economic policy and public administration to the position.
Before his appointment, he held senior roles in government, including serving as Principal Secretary at the National Treasury and working as an economic adviser.
He also worked at the International Monetary Fund, where he gained experience in economic policy and international financial affairs.
His professional background has involved matters relating to public finance, monetary policy and the management of economic challenges.
That experience has been important in his role at the CBK, where decisions on interest rates, inflation and financial stability influence the broader economy.
The 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations provided an opportunity for the government to recognise individuals whose work has contributed to Kenya’s progress in different sectors.
Mashujaa Day is observed annually on October 20 to honour heroes and heroines who have contributed to the country’s independence, development and public service.
Thugge’s recognition places economic governance among the areas being celebrated, reflecting the importance of strong financial institutions in supporting national development.
As Kenya pursues sustainable growth, his leadership at the CBK will remain significant in shaping monetary policy and maintaining confidence in the country’s financial system.
