South Africa Secures NDB USD 200 Million Loan for Limpopo Water Infrastructure

SOUTH AFRICA — In a major move to bolster regional resource management, the South African government has officially secured an NDB USD 200 million loan for Limpopo water infrastructure. The agreement, finalized with the New Development Bank (NDB), aims to drastically improve bulk water supply systems and drive long-term economic stability in the province.

The financial injection will be directed toward Stage 1 of the Olifants Management Model Program (OMMP). This critical initiative targets the bulk water supply deficits within the Mogalakwena Local Municipality. By abstracting water directly from the Flag Boshielo Dam on the Olifants River, the new scheme is designed to deliver raw water to local industrial operations. Furthermore, it will supply regional water treatment facilities, ensuring a steady, reliable stream of potable water for local communities.

According to the National Treasury, the primary objective of this expansion is to guarantee reliable resource access for both residents and businesses.

“By expanding access to reliable water supplies, the project is expected to strengthen water security and support economic activity in the region,” a spokesperson for the National Treasury stated. The Treasury emphasized that the sovereign loan provides favorable financing terms, ensuring sustainable water infrastructure at the local-government level.

The OMMP operates as a strategic public-private partnership. While the sovereign loan from the NDB to the Government of South Africa finances the public-sector contribution, the private-sector industrial users are represented by the Badirammogo Water User Association. This collaborative funding model ensures that both state and private stakeholders are actively invested in the region’s resource management.

Ultimately, this financial agreement highlights a deepening partnership between the South African government and the NDB.
