Will Vinicius Miss El Clasico? The Red Card, Referee’s Report and What Happens Next

Vinicius Junior’s dramatic dismissal against Villarreal has left Real Madrid facing the possibility of losing one of their biggest attacking stars for El Clasico. What began as a disallowed goal has developed into a disciplinary case involving alleged violent conduct, an angry confrontation with the referee and questions about how many matches the Brazilian could miss.

Real Madrid collected three important points against Villarreal on Saturday night, but their 1-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu was quickly overshadowed by a red card that could have serious consequences for Jose Mourinho’s side. Vinicius Junior, initially left on the bench, entered the game in the second half, appeared to score Madrid’s second goal and celebrated with his manager before VAR intervened. Within minutes, the Brazilian had gone from celebrating in front of the home supporters to leaving the pitch after receiving a straight red card for pulling an opponent’s hair.

The incident alone would have been enough to generate controversy, particularly with Barcelona waiting in El Clasico on October 25. However, the referee’s subsequent report has created another problem for Vinicius, whose reaction to the dismissal was officially documented as aggressive. Spanish media now suggest that a suspension of at least two matches is a realistic possibility, although the disciplinary authorities have yet to confirm the length of his punishment.

Vinicius began the Villarreal match among the substitutes, with Mourinho choosing a different attacking combination following the international break. Madrid struggled to break down their visitors during a relatively uneventful first half, although Kylian Mbappe threatened on several occasions. The Brazilian eventually entered in the 52nd minute, replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold as Mourinho reorganised his team in search of a breakthrough.

Yan Diomande opened the scoring in the 62nd minute after collecting a pass from Federico Valverde and finishing past Peter Gulacsi. The goal itself required a VAR review because the assistant referee had initially flagged for offside, but Madrid were eventually allowed to celebrate. Less than ten minutes later, Vinicius appeared to make the result safe, finishing a move involving Jude Bellingham before Mourinho ran towards his players to join the celebrations.

That second celebration proved premature. VAR official Alejandro Muniz Ruiz alerted referee Isidro Diaz de Mera to an incident earlier in the attacking move, when Vinicius had grabbed the hair of Villarreal midfielder Nathan Saliba. After reviewing the footage at the pitchside monitor, the referee cancelled the goal, awarded Villarreal a free kick and dismissed the Brazilian for violent conduct.

Instead of leading 2-0, Madrid suddenly found themselves defending a one-goal advantage with ten players. Vinicius reacted furiously, protesting the decision as teammates attempted to calm him down, while Antonio Rudiger and Arda Guler were among those involved in restraining him. Madrid eventually protected their lead thanks in part to another important contribution from Thibaut Courtois, but the discussion after the final whistle centred almost entirely on the dismissal.

The referee's official report, published after the match, provides the clearest explanation of why the disciplinary consequences could extend beyond a routine one-match suspension. Diaz de Mera recorded that Vinicius had pulled an opponent’s hair while the ball was in play but was not being contested between the two players. That distinction matters because it supports the interpretation of the incident as an act of violent conduct rather than a conventional challenge for possession.

The report also described what happened immediately after the red card. According to Diaz de Mera, Vinicius remained on the pitch, continued protesting loudly and approached the referee with what the official characterised as an aggressive attitude. Several teammates had to restrain him, although the referee specifically acknowledged that he could not identify any particular words used by the player.

This second part of the report has attracted considerable attention in Spain because it gives the disciplinary committee additional circumstances to examine. The original offence and the subsequent protest are not necessarily treated as identical matters, and the final decision will depend on how the committee interprets the referee’s account under the applicable disciplinary regulations.

Importantly, the description of an aggressive attitude does not automatically establish that Vinicius threatened the referee or committed a separate offence deserving an additional suspension. Those are questions for the disciplinary authorities, who must assess the report and determine whether the player’s conduct justifies further punishment.

As of October 11, no final disciplinary decision has been announced. Vinicius will miss Real Madrid’s next La Liga match against Sevilla because of his dismissal, but the larger question concerns whether his punishment will also cover the meeting with Barcelona on October 25.

Spanish radio station Cadena SER consulted former referee Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez, who suggested that Vinicius could receive a suspension of between two and three matches. His assessment reflects both the nature of the hair-pulling incident and the details included in the referee’s account of the player’s protests. Meanwhile, Mundo Deportivo has argued that a minimum two-match punishment is likely, which would rule the Brazilian out of El Clasico.

These assessments should not be confused with an official verdict. The Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary authorities will determine the actual punishment, and until that decision is published, reports of Vinicius definitely missing Barcelona remain projections rather than confirmed team news.

A one-match suspension would see him miss Sevilla but remain available for El Clasico, assuming no other disciplinary restrictions apply. A two-match ban would remove him from both fixtures, while a three-match punishment would extend his absence to the subsequent league encounter against Racing Santander. The precise length of the sanction therefore has consequences that go well beyond Madrid’s next domestic match.

Jose Mourinho’s response added another dimension to the controversy. The Portuguese coach, who had raced towards Vinicius to celebrate the goal that was eventually disallowed, chose not to attend his customary post-match press conference and also declined to speak to Real Madrid TV.

According to AS, Mourinho explained to the club that he preferred not to make public comments that might expose him to disciplinary action and potentially prevent him from attending El Clasico himself. The decision was particularly striking given his willingness to discuss controversial incidents in previous appearances and the numerous refereeing decisions that had frustrated Madrid during the Villarreal match.

The club’s dissatisfaction was not limited to the red card. Madrid received six yellow cards in addition to Vinicius’ dismissal, despite committing eight fouls compared with Villarreal’s thirteen, according to the figures highlighted by AS. That imbalance does not by itself establish that the referee made incorrect decisions, but it helps explain why the atmosphere became increasingly confrontational as the match progressed.

Aurelien Tchouameni was less reluctant to express his frustration. Speaking to Real Madrid TV after the game, the French midfielder said he did not understand the refereeing decisions or the red card shown to Vinicius, although he emphasised that securing the victory remained the most important outcome.

On the other side, Villarreal defender Juan Foyth acknowledged the possibility that Vinicius had not intended to hurt Saliba but nevertheless considered the offence worthy of a red card. The contrasting reactions underline the distinction between judging a player’s intention and assessing whether his actions constitute violent conduct under football’s disciplinary rules.

Vinicius broke his silence through an Instagram post after the match, apologising to his teammates and Real Madrid supporters for what had happened. His message focused on the team’s victory and his responsibility towards those affected by the dismissal, without directly addressing Saliba or offering a detailed explanation of the incident.

The apology may help calm the immediate reaction inside the dressing room, but it does not resolve the disciplinary process. Nor does it answer the tactical questions that were already emerging before Vinicius received his red card, particularly why Mourinho had decided to leave him out of the starting eleven.

Vinicius has struggled to reproduce his most influential form in the opening months of the season, and his starting position had already become a subject of discussion. Against Villarreal, Mourinho gave Diomande another opportunity, and the Ivorian responded with the decisive goal. The contrast between the two players’ evenings was impossible to ignore: one delivered the victory, while the other left his team short-handed and facing the possibility of further disruption.

That does not necessarily mean Madrid have found a permanent replacement for Vinicius. The Brazilian remains capable of changing matches through individual brilliance, particularly in open spaces, and Mourinho’s decision to introduce him during the second half demonstrated that he still considered him an important attacking option. Nevertheless, a suspension would force the coach to prepare for crucial fixtures without a player who has frequently been central to Madrid’s approach in major games.

Barcelona’s visit to the fixture list makes the timing particularly uncomfortable for Real Madrid. The two clubs are competing near the top of La Liga, and the October 25 meeting at Camp Nou carries obvious significance beyond the usual rivalry. Madrid cannot afford to lose ground unnecessarily, especially when Barcelona have begun the season strongly.

For Mourinho, the problem is not simply that Vinicius could be unavailable. It is that the manager may have to settle on a new attacking structure during a demanding period that also includes Champions League commitments. Diomande’s performance against Villarreal gives him an alternative on the left, while Arda Guler’s positional flexibility and Mbappe’s movement provide different ways of organising the front line.

There is also a psychological dimension to the situation. Vinicius has often thrived on high-pressure occasions, but his recent performances and repeated involvement in confrontational episodes have increased scrutiny of his decision-making. Missing El Clasico through suspension would deprive him of the opportunity to respond on the pitch in one of the season’s biggest matches.

For Madrid, however, the immediate priority is collective rather than individual. Mourinho must find a way to maintain attacking effectiveness, protect the balance of his team and avoid allowing the controversy to dominate preparations for the next fixtures.

The next decisive development will come from the disciplinary committee, which is expected to review Diaz de Mera’s report and determine the length of Vinicius’ suspension in the coming days. Real Madrid will then know whether the Brazilian is unavailable only against Sevilla or whether the consequences extend to Barcelona and potentially Racing Santander.

Mourinho’s next public appearance will also attract attention, particularly after his refusal to discuss the Villarreal match. With Madrid due to face Roma in the Champions League, the Portuguese coach is expected to speak before that game, giving journalists another opportunity to ask about the incident and the future of his attacking lineup.

For now, the facts are straightforward: Vinicius was sent off for pulling Saliba’s hair, his reaction was documented in the referee’s report, and his participation in El Clasico is seriously threatened. What remains uncertain is the precise punishment and how Mourinho intends to manage the situation.

Madrid escaped the Villarreal match with all three points, but the real cost of Vinicius’ red card may only become clear when the disciplinary decision arrives.
