Western Cape Police Boost Election Security Ahead of 2026 Local Polls

CAPE TOWN, Western Cape — As the November vote approaches, Western Cape election security has become a top priority for law enforcement, with police committing to heightened community visibility to ensure a peaceful democratic process.

With campaigns intensifying across the province, authorities are finalizing readiness plans designed to protect both voters and candidates. The upcoming 2026 Local Government Elections will facilitate a massive democratic exercise in the region, with the Cape Metro alone boasting just over 2.1 million registered voters.

A total of 106 political parties are set to contest across 30 municipalities. Recognizing the inevitable surge in grassroots activity over the next two months, police are stepping up patrols and coordinating closely with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and other key stakeholders.

Lt Gen Sizakhele Dyantyi, the Western Cape Police Commissioner, emphasized that the safety of candidates remains the core focus of their operational strategy. He explained that law enforcement is deliberately increasing its footprint in areas where political mobilization and campaigning are most active.

“We are engaging all the stakeholders, as well as other law enforcement agencies, so that we can ensure we are visible to create a safer environment,” Dyantyi stated. He acknowledged that candidates will naturally be moving through communities to gather support, and confirmed that police will maintain a strong presence in those spaces to guarantee their safety at all times.

The push for robust security measures follows a troubling string of political violence in the province over recent months. Several political figures have been murdered, including three ANC-linked individuals in Knysna—among them former mayor Aubrey Tsengwa—who were recently shot and killed. In June, Democratic Alliance (DA) candidate and councillor Sinovuyo Dyokwe was fatally shot in Dunoon. Additionally, a Build One South Africa (BOSA) candidate was shot and another injured in Gugulethu.

Despite the security challenges, the IEC confirms that the electoral race is officially underway following the closure of candidate nominations last week.

Western Cape Electoral Officer Michael Hendrickse outlined the vast logistical scope of the upcoming polls. Residents will be casting their ballots for representatives in the metro, one of 24 local councils, or one of five district councils. The province features 416 distinct wards, though Hendrickse clarified that not every party will field candidates in every single ward.

Political parties have the flexibility to run proportional representation (PR) lists alongside specific ward candidates, or across all wards within a municipality. Furthermore, the upcoming election offers a notable opportunity for independent representation, with 52 independent candidates officially registered across various municipalities.

The intense competition in certain areas will also have a physical impact on the voting process. Hendrickse highlighted that the most highly contested ward features 46 different candidates on the roster, a factor that will directly dictate the increased size of the ballot papers issued to voters in that district.
