Nairobi Set for Potential English Football Clash Following Inaugural January Showcase

NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya’s capital could host a major clash between English Premier League clubs at the newly constructed Raila Odinga International Stadium in mid-2027, according to recent statements by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.

Speaking following the announcement of an upcoming exhibition match, official statements indicate that Murkomen suggested Premier League sides Manchester United and Arsenal could face off in Nairobi around June or July 2027. The proposed fixture would form part of the government’s efforts to position the country as a hub for major international sporting events.

Reports suggest the initiative builds on the inauguration of the 60,000-seater stadium scheduled for January 5, 2027, which will feature a match between German side Bayern Munich and Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam. President William Ruto publicly confirmed the January fixture, describing it as the fulfillment of a pledge to bring world-class teams to Kenya.

Murkomen explained that the January match represents only the beginning of a broader sports infrastructure and hosting strategy. According to reports, government officials view these high-profile exhibitions as vital test events to validate Kenya’s readiness to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

Official statements further indicate that both Bayern Munich and Ajax have confirmed their participation in the January opening showcase through their official channels. Meanwhile, details regarding the prospective match between English clubs remain in early discussion stages, as sources said official confirmations from the respective English teams have yet to be finalized.https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1A2DqgL3HV/
