Pope Leo Leaves Hospital 4 Days After Lung Cancer Surgery
Pope Leo has been discharged from the hospital in Rome, four days after undergoing surgery for lung cancer, and is set to return to public duties at the Vatican.
The 71-year-old pontiff left Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Saturday afternoon after doctors confirmed that he was well enough to return home following medical examinations, including blood tests and chest imaging.
Leo walked unaided to his waiting car and stopped to speak with well-wishers gathered outside the hospital.
The pope underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove the lower lobe of his right lung after being diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer.
His first public engagement since the operation is scheduled for Sunday, when he is expected to lead the weekly prayers with pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square at noon local time (10:00 GMT).
The pontiff’s doctors have confirmed that the operation was completed successfully and without complications.
However, they have not disclosed the size of the tumour or whether the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes. Both factors are important in determining the likely course of the disease and the pope’s prognosis.
The diagnosis has raised concerns about the health and future leadership of the pontiff, who was elected in May 2025 and is regarded as relatively young and energetic for the position.
Pope Leo’s discharge from the hospital marks a significant step in his recovery, although further medical monitoring may be necessary as he resumes his responsibilities at the Vatican.
Leo’s return to public engagements will be closely watched as the Catholic Church awaits further information about his health and the potential impact of his illness on his papacy.
