Gold Prices Drops Drastically In One Week, Check New Prices
Global bullion markets have experienced a sharp contraction as spot gold prices tumbled by 3.5 per cent in a single week, shedding approximately KSh 18,551 ($146.01) per ounce following an aggressive sell-off across international technology and artificial intelligence equities.
According to the latest weekly statistical bulletin released by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), spot gold prices slid to $4,024.24 (KSh 522,789) per ounce on October 22, down from $4,170.25 (KSh 541,340) reported on October 15.
Financial market data from the Financial Times further indicates that trading pressure intensified toward the end of the week, driving the precious metal down to $3,998 per ounce breaking below the critical $4,000 threshold for the first time since July and extending a broader downward trajectory from record highs exceeding $5,400 observed earlier in the year.
The Central Bank of Kenya attributed the sudden slide in gold values to a liquidity-driven asset reallocation triggered by mounting anxiety over artificial intelligence capital expenditure returns.
As technology heavyweights tumbled, global institutional investors moved to liquidate holdings in gold and other precious metals to satisfy margin calls, offset equity losses, and manage capital requirements amidst broader equity market volatility.
Financial analysts noted that rising international oil prices and persistent inflation fears have further complicated market dynamics by influencing global interest rate expectations, which traditionally dictate non-yielding commodity demand.
Despite the pronounced turbulence across international commodity exchanges, the domestic currency impact remained insulated due to steady performance by the Kenyan shilling.
CBK data shows the local unit traded in a narrow band against the US dollar, closing the week at KSh 129.91 per dollar compared to KSh 129.81 recorded in the prior week.
Market strategists anticipate that potential shifts in Federal Reserve monetary policy alongside portfolio rebalancing could pave the way for a tactical price stabilization once immediate liquidity pressures clear across international trading desks.
