Newly Released Video Shows Sammy Gyamfi Condemning Illegal Mining Amid Allegations Against GoldBod

A newly released video showing the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, condemning illegal and irresponsible mining has attracted attention amid claims that he encouraged activities associated with illegal mining.

The footage, which captures Gyamfi speaking during an engagement with miners, provides additional context to his position on illegal mining and the ongoing efforts to address the environmental destruction caused by irresponsible mining activities across Ghana.

In the video, the GoldBod CEO is seen expressing his opposition to illegal mining and highlighting the need for responsible practices within the mining sector. His remarks appear to contradict allegations suggesting that he supported or encouraged illegal mining activities.

The development has brought renewed attention to the controversy surrounding his comments, with the newly released footage providing an opportunity for the public to consider his statements within the broader context of the engagement.

Illegal mining, popularly known in Ghana as galamsey, remains one of the country’s major environmental and economic challenges. The practice has contributed to the destruction of forest reserves, pollution of rivers and other water bodies, and the degradation of agricultural lands in several parts of the country.

Successive governments and environmental authorities have introduced various measures to combat the menace, but illegal mining continues to generate public concern because of its impact on the environment and the livelihoods of affected communities.

Sammy Gyamfi, who heads the Ghana Gold Board, has also been involved in discussions surrounding the country’s gold trading system and efforts to improve transparency and accountability in the sector.

The emergence of the video has therefore added another dimension to the public discussion surrounding the allegations against him. Rather than relying solely on isolated claims or interpretations of his remarks, the footage offers viewers an opportunity to examine what he said during the engagement.

As the controversy continues to attract attention, the circumstances surrounding the allegations and the full context of his statements remain important considerations.

The renewed discussion also highlights the need for consistent efforts by public officials, mining companies and other stakeholders to tackle illegal mining and protect Ghana’s natural resources.
