Two level crossing crashes in 24 hours

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has confirmed that five people were injured when a kombi hit a train at the Nandi level crossing in Chiredzi early on Wednesday morning.

In a statement, the NRZ said the accident happened at 2.35 am when a South African-registered kombi rammed into a locomotive. Three men and two women sustained injuries and were taken to hospital.

In a separate incident, a tipper truck was hit by a train at the Thompson Junction level crossing at around 10.40 pm on Tuesday. No injuries were reported.

The NRZ urged motorists, especially public transport drivers, to stop at level crossings and only proceed after making sure there is no approaching train.

“Five people were injured when a kombi hit a train at the Nandi level crossing in Chiredzi early this morning,” the NRZ said.

“The accident occurred at 0235 hours when the South African-registered kombi rammed into the locomotive.

“Three men and two women sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to hospital. The NRZ wishes the injured persons a speedy recovery.

“In a separate incident, a tipper truck was hit by a train at the Thompson Junction level crossing on Tuesday at about 2240 hours. No injuries were reported.

“We urge motorists, especially those driving Public Passenger Vehicles, to stop at level crossings and proceed only after ensuring that there is no approaching train.”
