OSHAKATI – A 23-year-old man was allegedly shot and killed by a police officer after reportedly robbing someone of a cellphone at Etango Mall in Oshakati last Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Titus Titus, a resident of Uupindi. According to Oshana police commander, Commissioner Andreas Shilelo, the incident followed an alleged cellphone robbery.
Members of the public chased the suspect and called for help. The police officer, who was walking towards the shops at the complex, responded to the calls for assistance.
According to the police report, the officer tried to stop the fleeing suspect, but the suspect allegedly pushed him away while carrying a knife.
The officer then drew his service pistol and fired one shot, striking the suspect.
Police said the suspect was taken to Oshakati Intermediate Hospital by a State ambulance in critical condition.
He later died from his injuries at about 15h30.
A Samsung A04 cellphone valued at N$1 700 was allegedly found in the suspect’s trouser pocket. Police also recovered a navy-blue Itel cellphone, although its owner had not yet been established.
The firearm allegedly used in the shooting was handed over to the police for investigation.
In another incident, a police superintendent reportedly encountered the same suspect earlier on the same day at the ATM section of FNB Oshakati Main Branch, where the deceased allegedly asked to use his cellphone to make a call.
Police said the officer noticed that the suspect was viewing his text messages and had allegedly copied an eWallet PIN linked to N$2 000. The suspect also allegedly sent a “Call me” request from the police officer’s cellphone to his own phone.
The officer reportedly took back his cellphone and seized the suspect’s cellphone before obtaining his personal details. Police said the seized cellphones and other exhibits have been booked and will undergo forensic examination.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
