“Ghana Ayɛ Mmɔbɔ” demo to hit Mahama government in New York on Wednesday

Ghanaians living abroad are expected to stage a demonstration in New York on Wednesday (23 September) to demand greater accountability from Ghana’s government over what organisers describe as unfulfilled campaign promises and concerns about governance.

The demonstration, organised under the theme “GHANA AYƐ MMƆBƆ“, is scheduled for 7:00 a.m. at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza near the United Nations headquarters.

According to a press notice issued by the organisers, the protest will focus on the implementation of commitments contained in the governing National Democratic Congress’s 2024 manifesto, as well as concerns over what they describe as selective justice and restrictions on free speech.

Among the issues organisers intend to raise are the government’s pledge to take immediate action against illegal mining, restore automatic employment for newly qualified teachers and nurses, abolish the double-track senior high school system, establish a Women’s Development Bank and create at least 10,000 businesses annually under the Adwumawura programme.

The organisers also intend to question the implementation of the government’s 24-hour economy policy, which was presented as a major programme for boosting production and employment. The presidency has said the policy is intended to support round-the-clock business operations and job creation.

The protesters say their demonstration is intended to focus on measurable accountability, asking what was promised, what has been delivered, what remains outstanding and what timelines the government can provide.
