Kenyans Allowed to Change Affordable Housing Units After Registration, Boma Yangu Explains How
AI summary
Kenyans who have registered for the government’s Affordable Housing Programme can now change their preferred housing units, including switching to different house sizes or relocating to another town.
The State Department for Housing and Urban Planning, through Boma Yangu, clarified that applicants are free to update their initial selections depending on their changing financial situations, family needs and preferred locations.
The announcement offers flexibility to Kenyans who may have initially selected smaller houses but now wish to upgrade to larger units, or those who want to move to more affordable options.
For instance, an applicant who initially selected a studio apartment can switch to a one-bedroom or three-bedroom unit. Similarly, someone who had chosen a three-bedroom house can downgrade to a studio or one-bedroom option.
Applicants can also change the location of their preferred houses. Someone who initially selected a unit in Southlands, Nairobi, can switch to a project in another town, including the Makasembo housing units in Kisumu, depending on availability.
According to the State Department, the process is completed through the Boma Yangu online portal.
Applicants are required to log into their accounts and navigate to the “Preferred House” section. They should select their previously chosen unit, click “View” and then choose “Remove” to cancel the existing preference.
After removing the previous selection, applicants can browse the available housing projects, choose another unit and set it as their new preferred house.
However, the department has not clarified whether the changes can still be made after an applicant has received an allocation or while making payments towards homeownership.
Under the Affordable Housing Programme, successful applicants are required to pay an initial deposit equivalent to at least five per cent of the house’s total cost.
The remaining balance is settled through monthly instalments, while applicants with sufficient funds can pay the entire amount upfront.
The latest clarification gives prospective homeowners greater flexibility as the government continues rolling out affordable housing projects in different parts of the country.
