The Mwense Magistrate Court has sentenced a 33-year-old man to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour for breaking into a dwelling and committing a felony.
Prosper Mwila was found guilty of entering a building on May 25, 2026, and stealing assorted items valued at K35,500, the property of Mark Chalwe.
The court heard that only a few of the stolen goods were recovered, including a water dispenser and a radio, with a valued total of K9,000.
In mitigation, Mwila appealed for his release, stating that he is on Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) and would face challenges accessing his medication.
He also told the court that he is still young and wished to make the best of his life.
Magistrate Fred Mwangala, however, dismissed the plea, noting that prison authorities would ensure he continues to receive his medication.
“I am sending you to prison so that you can go and reform. The fact that you are on ART is the more reason why you should have been responsible and avoided putting yourself in trouble,” said Magistrate Mwangala.
In a related matter, Magistrate Mwangala also sentenced 32-year-old Jimmy Mulenga to a total of 27 months’ imprisonment for trespassing and theft.
The sentences, which include three months for trespassing and 24 months for stealing a phone valued at K2,850 belonging to Joseph Mwelwa, will run concurrently.
In his mitigation, Mulenga pleaded for leniency, claiming he had learned his lesson and would not re-offend.
