The Federal High Court, Abuja has fixed November 12 for the arraignment of two women accused of allegedly spreading false information online that Mrs Uju Peter Akubueze killed her husband’s first wife.
Justice Binta Nyako fixed the date on Wednesday after the court could not take the plea of the defendants, Nkiru Ulasi and Ogechukwu Angela, who were absent when the matter, listed first on the cause list, was called.
Both the prosecution counsel, John Ijagbemi, and defence counsel, Pascal Nnaji, were present in court.
Following an agreement between the two lawyers, Justice Nyako adjourned the case until November 12 for the arraignment of the defendants.
The Inspector-General of Police, through Ijagbemi of the Directorate of Legal Services, Zone 7 Police Headquarters, Abuja, filed a three-count charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/511/2026 against the defendants.
Ulasi and Angela are listed as the first and second defendants respectively.
The charges border on alleged cyberbullying, defamation, threat, cyberstalking and spreading of false information against Akubueze and her family.
In count three, the defendants and others still at large were accused of committing cyberstalking between March and April 2026 through their WhatsApp and TikTok platforms.
They allegedly circulated videos, photographs and WhatsApp conversations purportedly containing false and damaging information about Akubueze.
The prosecution alleged that the defendants “lied and accused Uju Peter Akubueze of killing her husband’s first wife, and labeling her as an HIV carrier, without any justification.”
In count two, the defendants and others at large were accused of using the same platforms to publish abusive messages allegedly intended to bully, threaten, defame and harass Akubueze and members of her family, as well as spread false information about them.
The prosecution further alleged that the defendants knew the information they published was false.
According to the charge, the alleged offences contravene Section 24(1)(a) and (b) and Section 24(2)(a) and (c) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024, and are punishable under Section 24(2)(i) and (ii).
The defendants are expected to take their pleas when they appear before the court on November 12.
