Seven Ethiopian Armed Groups Just Joined Forces To Overthrow The Government, And Here Is What You Need To Understand

Seven Ethiopian opposition and armed groups formally announced their coalition on September 20, 2026. Amhara Fano National Movement chairman Zemene Kassie broadcast the coalition statement live on Tigrai TV. The alliance unites former rivals, including the Amhara Fano National Movement, the Oromo Liberation Army, and the Tigray People's Liberation Front. Four smaller regional organizations joined them, including the Ogaden National Liberation Front, the Afar National Unity Revolutionary Front, the Benishangul Peoples' Liberation Movement, and the Gumuz Peoples' Democratic Movement.

The Backstory You Need To Know

Ethiopia faced continuous regional conflicts across multiple fronts over the last six years. Federal troops fought a bitter two-year war against Tigray forces from 2020 to 2022, resulting in an estimated 600,000 deaths before the Pretoria peace agreement. That peace deal ruptured federal alliances with Amhara militias, sparking heavy fighting between federal forces and Fano fighters across the Amhara region since 2023. Meanwhile, federal troops continued battling the Oromo Liberation Army in Oromia. Recent clashes in Tigray earlier this year signaled the collapse of the 2022 truce, driving these historically hostile factions to align against Addis Ababa.

Why The Timing Shifted

Abiy Ahmed consolidated power through his Prosperity Party while military forces fought separate insurgencies across isolated regions. Opposition leaders realized that fighting federal troops independently allowed Addis Ababa to contain each conflict area sequentially. The coalition members conducted months of secret negotiations to coordinate command structures. By establishing a unified front, the alliance forces federal commanders to defend four or five active battlegrounds simultaneously.

What Happens To Regional Stability Now

The coalition urged members of the Ethiopian national defense forces to abandon the federal government and join their campaign. Coalition representatives promised to set up an inclusive transitional authority under a shared charter once they clear federal officials from office. However, deep ideological and territorial disputes persist among Amhara, Oromo, and Tigrayan factions. Federal authorities have not issued an official public response to the declaration.

Why It Matters

Abiy Ahmed built his national strategy on dividing regional rivals and defeating local insurgencies piecemeal. Former combatants joining forces across Amhara, Oromia, and Tigray changes the military math entirely by stretching federal army units across multiple active fronts. Uniting armed groups around a single goal creates immediate operational power, but overcoming historical territorial grievances during a regime transition presents a massive hurdle. If this coalition succeeds in destabilizing Addis Ababa without establishing real administrative trust, the Horn of Africa risks entering an era of prolonged fragmentation.
