ONGWEDIVA– Sinomine Tsumeb Community Trust has invested N$750 000 in education initiatives in the Oshikoto region for the academic year 2026, supporting mathematics and science, school feeding programmes, vulnerable learners and sports development.

The funding is aimed at improving learners’ academic performance, supporting school attendance and creating opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Of the total amount, N$380 000 has been allocated to the 2026 Mathematics and Science Project to strengthen the teaching and learning of the subjects across secondary schools in Tsumeb.

Speaking at the handover earlier this week, Sinomine Trustee Isai Nekundi said that they firmly believe that quality education is the cornerstone of a prosperous Namibia.

“We are honoured to enhance learning environments and support the holistic development of learners in the region,” he said.

Oshikoto Director of Education Hilma Nuunyango- George said that the contribution demonstrates the importance of partnerships between government and the private sector in addressing challenges facing the education sector, including inadequate infrastructure and limited resources.

“We continue to face various challenges, including inadequate educational infrastructure and other resource constraints that affect our efforts to provide quality education to every learner. While these challenges remain, we are encouraged by the willingness of our stakeholders to join hands with us in addressing them,” she said.

Another N$200 000 will support school feeding programmes at selected primary schools in the Oshivelo Circuit, providing nutritional support intended to improve attendance and concentration in classrooms.

The trust has also allocated N$70 000 to the Reverend Juuso Shikongo Secondary School Grade 8 Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Special Admission Project to cover essential school requirements for vulnerable learners.

A further N$70 000 will go towards purchasing sports equipment for various sporting codes at schools in Tsumeb, while N$30 000 has been allocated to the Oshivelo Circuit Science Fair to encourage innovation, critical thinking and healthy academic competition.

“The trust’s support also extends to vulnerable learners through a programme initiated by the regional education directorate in 2024 to identify and enrol children requiring educational assistance. Through the partnership, five learners were enrolled in 2025 and four in 2026, with another four expected to benefit in 2027,” she said.

She stated that the trust covers expenses including school uniforms, toiletries, bedding and stationery, while parents are responsible for transporting the learners to and from their hostels.
