Pirates Star Thapelo Mokobodi Exposes Kaizer Chiefs in Soweto Derby Nightmare

Mokobodi Makes His Mark at Orlando Pirates as He Matches AmaZulu Star

Orlando Pirates midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi continues to attract attention in the Betway Premiership following an impressive start to life at the Soweto giants. The former Stellenbosch FC and Marumo Gallants midfielder has shown that he has the quality to compete at a higher level since arriving at the Buccaneers ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Mokobodi’s growing influence has become one of the positive developments in Orlando Pirates’ season, with the midfielder demonstrating his ability to contribute both offensively and defensively. His recent performances have also placed him in the spotlight as comparisons emerge with players making an impact at other Premiership clubs, including AmaZulu FC.

The 23-year-old joined Pirates from Stellenbosch in July 2026 after spending the previous campaign in the Cape Winelands. His move followed a period of development in which he gained valuable experience in domestic competitions and featured in continental football.

Pirates secured his services on a three-year contract, with the club believing he could make a meaningful contribution to their midfield options.

That confidence is beginning to pay off. Mokobodi has brought energy, tactical awareness and versatility to the team, qualities that have helped him earn opportunities under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.

His performances have been particularly encouraging as Pirates continue their pursuit of success across domestic competitions. The midfielder’s ability to recover possession, move the ball forward and create opportunities makes him a valuable option in Ouaddou’s system.

His standout display in the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs on 31 October provided further evidence of his growing importance. Pirates secured a 2-1 victory at FNB Stadium, with Mokobodi providing assists for Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi.

The midfielder was named Player of the Match after playing a decisive role in both goals. His contribution helped Pirates claim an important victory over their biggest rivals and strengthened his reputation among the club’s supporters.

Mokobodi’s progress is also a reminder of how quickly a player’s fortunes can change through consistent performances and the right opportunities. His journey from Marumo Gallants to Stellenbosch and now Orlando Pirates reflects a steady rise through South African football.

At Pirates, he is competing in an environment where expectations are high and every performance is closely scrutinised. Nevertheless, his recent displays suggest that he is embracing the challenge.

The comparison with an AmaZulu star adds another talking point to his impressive campaign. However, maintaining his current level will be essential if he hopes to establish himself among the league’s leading midfielders.

With the season still unfolding, Mokobodi has an opportunity to build on his promising start. For Orlando Pirates, his continued development could prove important in their pursuit of silverware.

The Buccaneers will hope their rising midfield star can maintain his momentum and continue delivering performances that make a difference when it matters most.
