Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, and Thyolo Central MP, Dr Ben Phiri, has pledged to construct a community sports ground at Nchilamwera, near the unfinished technical college in his constituency.
Ben Phiri pledges new community sports ground for Thyolo constituency
The announcement was made by his constituency aide, Stewart Kunje, during the finals of the Dr Ben Phiri Sports Trophy held on Sunday at Adolorata Ground.
Kunje said the proposed facility would give young people in Nchilamwera a proper space to develop and showcase their sporting talent.
“Dr Ben Phiri is committed to ensuring that young people in Nchilamwera have a proper place where they can develop and showcase their sporting talent. That is why he has pledged to construct a community sports ground near the unfinished technical college,” he said.
He added that the new ground would complement the Thyolo Stadium, currently under construction, by bringing sporting activities closer to local communities.
Thyolo District Sports Officer Olga Mlambe welcomed the pledge, describing it as “an answered prayer” following long-standing calls for more sporting infrastructure in the district.
“We have been asking for this for a long time. We have been asking government to consider us, just as we appreciate the Thyolo Stadium that is currently under construction,” she said.
Mlambe said the Dr Ben Phiri Sports Trophy had brought together football and netball teams from across the constituency, offering a valuable opportunity to identify and nurture emerging talent.
“We believe that through this competition we can build a strong team to represent Thyolo Constituency,” she said, adding that she hoped future editions of the tournament could be staged at the proposed Nchilamwera ground once construction is complete.
Organising committee chairperson Iweni Mbwana thanked Dr Phiri for his continued support of the tournament and expressed optimism about future finals being held at the new facility.
