Palm House unveils new garden space for a Heritage Day fire feast

Heritage Day will bring something new to the gardens of Palm House Boutique Hotel & Spa, where food, fire and South African heritage will come together for a special opening celebration, Cape {town} Etc reports.

Palm Terrace and Bar1920 are extending beyond their usual spaces and onto the hotel’s garden lawn, creating a new outdoor setting designed for everything from long lunches and drinks to celebrations, private events and special occasions.

The new space is built around one particularly eye-catching feature: an open kitchen.

Instead of keeping the cooking tucked away behind closed doors, the chefs will be right in the middle of the experience, preparing dishes over fire, smoke and hot coals while guests watch the action unfold around them.

The new garden setting will officially make its debut on Heritage Day with a Heritage Day Fire Feast, priced at R895 per person.

And this is not simply a meal designed around flames. Each course has been put together as a celebration of South African ingredients, with the menu tracing the food on the plate back to the farms, oceans and communities behind it.

Guests can expect ABALOBI line-caught bream and East Coast rock lobster rolls, followed by Glen Oaks grass-fed ribeye. The feast then turns its attention to seasonal vegetables supplied by community farmers in Masiphumelele and Phillippi.

Dessert keeps the local theme going, with a Kamado-baked malva pudding served with burnt honey and naartjie custard.

A glass of Palm House wine or cider will also be waiting for guests on arrival, before the open kitchen takes centre stage for the rest of the experience.

The new lawn space is intended to capture the character that has already made Palm Terrace a social gathering point at Palm House, but in a more relaxed outdoor setting.

Palm Terrace describes itself as a restaurant made for lingering, sharing and enjoying good food, with a menu that draws from local growers, farmers and producers. Familiar favourites sit alongside regional flavours, creating a style of dining that is generous and accessible rather than overly formal.

Taking that approach outdoors opens up a different kind of experience.

Guests can settle in for a long afternoon, watch chefs cook in front of them, meet friends for drinks or use the garden as the backdrop for a celebration.

Surrounded by the gardens of the heritage property, the space also brings together two sides of Palm House: the character and history of the property, and the easy-going feel of an outdoor gathering.

It is a setting that can change with the occasion, whether that means a leisurely lunch in the sunshine, an evening around the fire or a larger celebration.

For Palm House, the wider experience is about stepping away from the pace of everyday life. Guests can spend time in the gardens, enjoy a meal, book a treatment at the spa or simply settle into the surroundings for an afternoon.

For Heritage Day, however, the focus will be firmly on the fire and the food.
