TALIBAN OFFERS US ACCESS TO AFGHANISTAN’S MINERAL WEALTH FOR FROZEN ASSETS
Afghanistan’s Taliban government is offering the United States access to its vast mineral and natural resource reserves in exchange for sanctions relief. The deal would also unlock about 9.5 billion dollars in frozen Afghan assets, including around 7 billion held in the US.
Afghanistan sits on massive deposits of copper, iron ore, lithium, gold, rare-earth elements, uranium, natural gas and crude oil. The country’s mineral wealth has been estimated at over 1 trillion dollars.

The Taliban is offering access to resources in exchange for legitimacy and money. The US has to decide whether to deal with a government it still does not recognise.
America is effectively being offered a stake in Afghanistan’s future. But the Taliban controls the territory and the resources.
Would the US be buying a partner or just legitimising the very regime it spent 20 years fighting.
