Magoola joins Durban City

Ugandan goalkeeper Jamal Salim Magoola has joined another South African club, Durban City FC, after paperwork delayed the official announcement.
The 31-year-old completed the transfer in July on a free deal after leaving Richards Bay FC at the end of last season.
Magoola joins the newly promoted Betway Premiership side as head coach Khalil Ben Youssef rebuilds his goalkeeping department after veterans Darren Keet and Ayanda Mtshali retired last season.
Nedbank Cup holders Durban City are preparing for a busy campaign that includes the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary second round, where they face Mauritius’ AS Port Louis 2000, having earned continental qualification through their cup triumph.
Magoola is expected to fill the gap left by Keet and bring valuable experience to a side looking to compete on both domestic and continental fronts.
The goalkeeper spent three seasons at Richards Bay, which he joined in July 2022 from Pretoria Callies, a South African second-tier side that has since folded.
He made 85 appearances across all competitions for Richards Bay, keeping 34 clean sheets. However, his opportunities reduced last season, when he played just seven matches, six in the Betway Premiership and one in the Nedbank Cup.
His performances had attracted interest from Kaizer Chiefs at the height of his form last season, but the interest never resulted in a concrete offer.
The move to Durban City gives Magoola a fresh opportunity to secure regular playing time and strengthen his reputation in South African football.
His career has taken him through Uganda, Sudan and South Africa. He began at Express FC, helping the club win the 2011/12 Uganda Premier League title, before joining KCCA FC, where he won back-to-back league titles in the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons.
In 2014, he moved to Sudan to join Al-Merrikh SC, winning league and cup honours before a lengthy spell with Al-Hilal.
He later moved to South Africa, featuring for Pretoria Callies before joining Richards Bay in 2022. His switch to Durban City keeps him in the country as he takes on a new challenge.
At international level, Magoola made his Uganda Cranes debut on July 10, 2012, against South Sudan. He was also part of the squads that represented Uganda at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, the 2019 final in Egypt and 2025 in Morocco.
Magoola will now look to use his experience to establish himself at Durban City as the club prepares to settle in the top flight, where they currently lie 10th with 7 points.
