Rare Throwback: Trevor Manuel, Jacob Zuma and Ronnie Kasrils Together in SA Political History

A historical photograph featuring Trevor Manuel, Jacob Zuma and Ronnie Kasrils from the 1980s or 1990s has brought attention to an important period in South Africa’s political journey. The image offers a glimpse into an era when the country was experiencing significant political changes, intense negotiations and the struggle to establish a democratic future.

The three men are associated with different chapters of South Africa’s political history, particularly the struggle against apartheid and the transition to democracy. Their presence in the same historical frame provides an opportunity to reflect on the individuals who became prominent figures in the country’s political landscape.

Trevor Manuel emerged as an important anti-apartheid activist during the 1980s. He was involved in the United Democratic Front (UDF), serving as its regional secretary in the Western Cape and becoming a member of its national executive. His political activities resulted in repeated arrests and periods of detention under the apartheid government. Following the unbanning of the ANC in 1990, he became involved in rebuilding the organisation’s structures.

Jacob Zuma, meanwhile, had spent years working in the ANC’s underground structures and in exile. He held senior responsibilities within the movement, including intelligence-related positions. After returning to South Africa in 1990, he became involved in the political negotiations and organisational work surrounding the country’s transition.

Ronnie Kasrils also played a significant role in the anti-apartheid struggle. He was involved in Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the ANC’s armed wing, and held senior responsibilities within its military structures. After returning to South Africa in 1990, he continued his involvement in the liberation movement.

The early 1990s represented a defining period for South Africa. The release of Nelson Mandela in 1990, the unbanning of liberation movements and negotiations between political organisations opened the way for the country’s first democratic elections in April 1994.

Manuel, Zuma and Kasrils subsequently occupied different positions in the democratic government and the ANC. Their political journeys reflected the responsibilities undertaken by former liberation movement members as South Africa moved from apartheid towards constitutional democracy.

Looking back at photographs from this period offers an opportunity to revisit the country’s political history and remember the people who occupied important positions during a difficult and transformative chapter.

Although the exact date, location and circumstances surrounding this particular photograph have not been established, the three figures provide a historical connection to South Africa’s liberation struggle and democratic transition.
