Orlando Pirates will have to get proper back-up for their star goalkeeper Sipho Chaine if they are to cope with continental football.

Orlando Pirates are set to return to the CAF Champions League, eager to make up for lost time when they open their campaign against La Cure Sylvester in Mauritius this Sunday (1:30 pm kick-off).
Last season, Pirates stumbled at the final hurdle of the Champions League group stage qualifiers after losing on penalties to St Eloi Lupopo at home, following a 3-3 aggregate draw.
With that experience in mind, we examine the key areas Pirates must address this season.
Avoid underestimating the opposition
Pirates underestimated Lupopo in the first leg away in Congo. At the time, then-coach Abdeslam Ouaddou started with a makeshift lineup featuring mostly new players, while an experienced contingent – including Bafana Bafana players – started on the bench.
Lupopo drew confidence from their 3-0 home win, and Dieumerci Mukoko displayed arrogance during their visit to Orlando. The midfielder bullied Pirates’ players on and off the ball, using gestures to signal dominance throughout the tie.
Address goalkeeping depth
Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine played a massive 42 games in all competitions for Pirates last season, missing only one in the Champions League. He shone in most matches, leading Pirates to a domestic treble, including the Betway Premiership, MTN8, and Carling Knockout.
With Chaine the only established goalkeeper remaining at the club following the departure of Melusi Buthelezi, Pirates could struggle if he faces injury or suspension. They need to address this depth issue before they are forced to test new options on the continental stage.
Implement squad rotation
Pirates face their most challenging season yet. They are expected to defend their domestic trophies while contending for the continental title. This will not be easy, and they require competitive depth that remains at peak performance with every passing game.
Departures and injuries have already created gaps, forcing Ouaddou to integrate new faces. Juggling domestic and continental football will be demanding, which is why the team must prioritise maintaining a clean bill of health.
Take it one game at a time
While it is widely accepted that African football is a challenge to navigate, the reality is that no two matches are the same – they vary in opponent profiling and the circumstances surrounding the results. Pirates must recognise this nuance.
Ultimately, Pirates must understand that winning – especially away from home – is the only way to successfully navigate the continent.
Adopt a resilient away mentality
While football on the continent has evolved, environments remain hostile, whether due to club tactics, local hospitality, or passionate fanbases. Pirates cannot afford to crack under pressure; they must face these challenges head-on.
Developing a strong, resilient mentality away from home will not only toughen the players but will also give them the drive to win and overcome obstacles where it matters most: on the field.
