German Embassy’s Climate Talks end with policy brief on galamsey, coastal erosion and conflict

The German Embassy in Accra has wrapped up its Climate Talks 2026 series, with community dialogues in four of Ghana’s most climate-affected regions leading to a policy brief on climate and security risks.
The series, themed “Building Climate Security Resilience,” brought policymakers, security actors, researchers, civil society groups and local communities together to work out practical ways of managing climate-related security risks.
Each forum took a different problem. It began in Tamale with climate-induced conflicts and moved to Bolgatanga to discuss climate-driven migration and its security implications. In Kumasi, participants looked at the link between climate change and illegal mining. The last session, in Keta, focused on a people-centred approach to coastal erosion.
The embassy said the dialogues improved cooperation and communication between community leaders, civil society, government representatives and security institutions, including the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ministry of Interior.
Its aim was to strengthen conflict prevention and cooperation between local populations and security institutions.
German Ambassador Frederik Landshoeft said the series showed that climate resilience matters for peace.
“Germany and Ghana are partners in building a secure and sustainable future. Through the Climate Talks 2026, we have demonstrated that climate resilience is a fundamental pillar of peace and security,” he said.
“By translating community-led insights into a strategic Policy Brief, we are supporting Ghana’s efforts to turn environmental challenges into opportunities for stability and long-term growth,” he added.
The embassy said the project ends with the policy brief and a national debriefing forum, meant to bring climate-security considerations into Ghana’s official planning and response frameworks.
Germany also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ghana’s climate objectives through technical cooperation, institutional capacity-building and partnerships that respect national priorities and promote local ownership.
