Modern processors are being designed with dedicated neural processing units, or NPUs, alongside traditional CPUs and GPUs.
These components can handle certain AI tasks more efficiently thereby potentially reducing the need to send every workload to the cloud.
This could eventually make features such as AI-assisted image editing, transcription, translation and content generation faster and more private on the device itself.
The development also reflects a broader industry movement toward edge AI, where

Mini PCs are challenging the idea that powerful computers need to be large
At the opposite end of the spectrum, mini PCs are becoming increasingly capable.
