Renewed Cape Town taxi violence has prompted the temporary closure of Delft Public Transport Interchange (PTI), with reports of unrest in Mfuleni and Gugulethu. The City has deployed resources to protect commuters and transport infrastructure, *Cape {town} Etc *reports.
In a statement released on Wednesday, 28 October, the City said the latest outbreak stems from longstanding route and operating-right disputes between the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) and the Congress of Democratic Taxi Associations (CODETA).
Urban Mobility Mayco member Rob Quintas said the latest tensions involve routes between Delft, Epping and Killarney, after years of negotiations, mediation and even High Court intervention failed to produce a lasting resolution.
Commuters caught in the middle
The City warned that further violence could disrupt thousands of people who rely on minibus taxis to reach work, school and essential services. It also said hundreds of thousands of Capetonians depend on public transport daily, leaving commuters vulnerable when key facilities are shut.
‘Thousands of passengers depend on these services every day,’ Quintas said, calling on taxi leaders to bring their members under control and pursue lawful processes and mediation.
The latest developments follow other incidents covered by* Cape {town} Etc*, including the** mayor’s call for stronger policing** after deadly shootings and a** fatal shooting at Delft’s Palm taxi rank** on 22 October.
Commuters have been advised to avoid taxis operated by CATA and CODETA amid fears of further retaliatory violence.
The City says it will monitor developments and update commuters if facility operations change. Its statement did not provide a reopening time for Delft PTI.
