2027: ‘Don’t let them lie to you, fuel subsidy is gone for good’ – Tinubu tells Nigerians

According to a report by Daily Post on Saturday, October 24, 2026, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that Nigeria’s petrol subsidy regime is a thing of the past, urging Nigerians not to be misled by political opponents ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Tinubu made the remarks on Saturday during the flag-off of his presidential re-election campaign at Ranchers Bees Stadium, also known as Kaduna Township Stadium, in Kaduna State.

Addressing supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the president defended his administration’s decision to remove the petrol subsidy in 2023, arguing that the policy had been associated with corruption, fraudulent invoicing and the smuggling of petroleum products across Nigeria’s borders.

He urged voters to carefully scrutinise the promises made by opposition politicians as political parties prepare for the next general election.

“Be careful, watch them, don’t let them lie to you,” Tinubu told the crowd.

The president maintained that the country had moved beyond the subsidy system and should focus on policies aimed at improving economic conditions, promoting development and creating opportunities for Nigerians.

“What is the past is the past, fuel subsidy is in our past, no more corruption, no more falsification of invoices, no more lies, no more smuggling of fuel,” he said.

Tinubu’s comments reinforce his administration’s position that removing the subsidy was necessary to address longstanding challenges in Nigeria’s petroleum sector and reduce the financial burden on government finances.

However, the policy has remained controversial because of its impact on petrol prices, transportation costs, food prices and the cost of living since its introduction.

The removal of the subsidy in May 2023 triggered a sharp increase in the price of petrol, placing additional pressure on households and businesses already struggling with economic difficulties.

The Federal Government has defended the reform as part of a broader effort to redirect public resources towards infrastructure, social programmes and other development priorities.

Nevertheless, many Nigerians continue to demand measures that would cushion the effects of rising living costs and improve household purchasing power.

At the Kaduna rally, Tinubu also appealed to Nigerians to give him another opportunity to lead the country, promising that his administration would continue working towards a more prosperous future.

He told supporters that the country’s economic direction and their personal prosperity would depend partly on the decisions they make at the ballot box.

“Your prosperity is here. Your future is in your hands, your fingerprints will reflect it,” the president said.

He subsequently asked voters to give him another mandate, expressing confidence that his administration could deliver improved conditions for Nigerians if allowed to continue beyond its first term.

“May you give me the privilege to promise you once again of a better tomorrow,” he added.

The rally marked an opportunity for the APC to mobilise its supporters in Kaduna State and promote Tinubu’s record ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The president’s campaign message centred on continuity, economic reforms and the need for voters to distinguish between the policies of his administration and the proposals being advanced by opposition figures.

Tinubu’s remarks also come amid political disagreements over the future of Nigeria’s petrol subsidy policy.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who is associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the supplied report, has promised to restore fuel subsidies as part of his proposed approach to addressing the economic hardship facing Nigerians.

The proposal has drawn criticism from Tinubu’s administration, which has characterised the opposition’s position as political propaganda.
