German Embassy in Ghana inaugurates new CHPS compound in Koblimahagu

Koblimahagu, a community in the Northern Region, is set to benefit from improved access to healthcare following the inauguration of a new Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound.
The facility is expected to bring essential health services closer to approximately 8,400 residents, reducing the need to travel long distances for basic medical care.
The new compound will provide a more accessible point for services such as antenatal care, childhood vaccinations, and the early detection of illnesses, particularly for pregnant women, children and other vulnerable residents.
German Ambassador to Ghana Frederik Landshöft, GIZ Country Director Sandra Retzer and KfW Country Director Amelie Stanzel-Ferreira joined community members and officials of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly for the inauguration.
The project was driven by the community’s own development priorities, with residents identifying improved access to healthcare as a key need. The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly subsequently incorporated the project into its development plans.
Through German Cooperation, GIZ Ghana supported efforts to strengthen participatory planning and local governance, while KfW provided financing through Ghana’s District Assemblies Common Fund Responsiveness Factor Grant.
The project highlights an approach to development in which communities identify their needs, local authorities integrate them into development plans, and development partners provide support to help deliver the required infrastructure.
Germany’s contribution to the programme has amounted to approximately GH¢774 million since 2009, making it the largest international contributor, according to information from the German Mission in Ghana.
The programme, implemented in collaboration with Ghana and Switzerland, has supported more than 11,200 infrastructure projects across all 261 districts of the country.
The inauguration of the Koblimahagu CHPS compound is another example of how community-led planning, local government involvement, and international cooperation can translate development priorities into essential services.
For the residents of Koblimahagu, the immediate benefit is practical: access to basic healthcare closer to home.
