/Khomanin authority anticipates N$38m office building
AI summary
The /Khomanin Traditional Authority is set to receive N$38 million from the government to build an official office for Queen Gaos Julienne Gawanas and her traditional authority.
Spokesperson Walter Haseb said the government, through the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, made provision for the funds in the mid-term budget. He was speaking last week at a press conference by the royal family and the Traditional Authority in Dolam, Katutura.
Hoabeb said the traditional authority welcomed the allocation as an important investment that would improve its operations and give the leadership and the community proper working facilities.
“We are thankful to the government for unveiling such funds to build the /Khomanin office,” he said.
He said a site for the building has already been identified. The facility would house various offices and services, including a youth office and structures responsible for traditional affairs, and would make it easier for the traditional authority to serve community members.
“It will make our job easier. We hope to have all types of offices there, from youth offices to the head of traditions,” Haseb said.
Hoabeb said, however, that he did not know when construction would begin. He urged the relevant authorities to speed up the process so the money is used before it reverts to the Treasury.
“I am not aware when construction will commence, but we have to speed up the process before the money is taken back to Treasury,” he said. The allocation comes while the traditional authority is embroiled in a leadership dispute.
A faction of community members is calling for Gawanas’ removal, but the traditional authority does not recognise the group behind it.
It maintains that Gawanas remains the legitimate leader and has called the purported election bogus and unlawful.
The Traditional Authority says the new building would give it a permanent administrative base from which to coordinate its affairs and engage with different sections of the community.
