The vetting of aspirants for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Savannah Regional executive elections has ended in Damongo, with the Deputy Organiser position going unopposed.
Forty-seven aspirants were vetted for 15 positions.
After the exercise, the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Sulemana Yusif, lamented how few women are contesting. He said women mostly go for the women’s organiser position and avoid the others because they see them as positions for men.
Mr Yusif said he was pleased that one woman is contesting for vice chairperson and another for communications officer, both alongside male aspirants.
He attributed the low turnout partly to northern culture and tradition, which he said sometimes does not allow women to take part in certain positions.
He ended by urging the youth and aspirants to stop making false allegations against each other.
