STANBIC Bank Zimbabwe has handed over laptops to five Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) students benefiting from its five-year scholarship programme for financially disadvantaged students.
The three female and two male beneficiaries, who are either orphaned or from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, will receive full tuition, accommodation and meals for the standard duration of their programmes.
The handover follows the launch of the scholarship fund at CUT in March.
Stanbic Bank acting head of public sector Monalisa Sigauke said the programme demonstrated the bank’s commitment to supporting education and strengthening links between industry and academia.
“We are delighted to be back here again to fulfil our commitment to supporting learning, innovation, research and the development of our future leaders. At Stanbic Bank, we believe that education is one of the most powerful drivers of economic growth and social transformation,” Sigauke said.
She said access to technology was now essential for students to conduct research, develop practical skills and compete in an increasingly digital economy.
“Today’s handover of laptops reflects our commitment to investing in education and empowering young people with the tools they need to succeed. We trust that these laptops will enhance teaching and learning, improve access to digital resources, and support students in unlocking their full potential,” Sigauke said.
CUT vice-chancellor Irvin Mpofu said the donation was timely as the university had adopted a policy of embedding artificial intelligence (AI) across all modules.
Mpofu said laptops were critical to implementing and developing AI, particularly for students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.
“We are deeply grateful to be recognised by Stanbic Bank, one of the leading banks in the region, through the strengthening of our partnership, the provision of scholarships and the donation of laptops to facilitate digital inclusion for our students. On behalf of the students, we would like to sincerely thank Stanbic Bank for sponsoring this programme,” Mpofu said.
The latest beneficiaries bring to 42 the number of university students supported through the initiative since it was introduced five years ago.
The beneficiaries have been drawn from Manicaland, Midlands, Matabeleland and Mashonaland West, including students from the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Africa University and Midlands State University.
