A five-year-old girl has been placed in an induced coma and faces multiple surgeries after an 18-year-old provisional driver allegedly ploughed a BMW into a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters gathered to farewell the team ahead of the NRL Grand Final.
Ten people, including three children, were injured in the Saturday morning incident in Newcastle, north of Sydney. A 67-year-old man and the five-year-old girl were reported to be in critical condition.
The teenage driver was arrested at the scene and taken for mandatory drug and alcohol testing as police launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Supporters Were Farewelling Knights Ahead of Grand Final
Thousands of supporters had gathered to celebrate the Newcastle Knights and watch the team leave for the Grand Final when the incident occurred.
Emergency services were called to the Newcastle Link Road roundabout at Transfield Avenue at about 9.30am following reports that a vehicle being driven erratically had struck people standing on the pavement.
The crash forced authorities to change the planned route of the Knights’ procession while emergency crews treated casualties and police secured the area.
Young Girl and Mother Face Long Recovery
A fundraising campaign has since been established for the critically injured five-year-old and her mother, who was also seriously hurt.
Ashleigh Gibbs, who is understood to be a relative of the child, said the girl had suffered severe injuries and had already undergone multiple operations while remaining in an induced coma.
She said the girl’s mother would also require several operations and was expected to face a lengthy recovery.
According to Gibbs, the severity of the mother’s injuries means she is unlikely to be able to work for some time, creating additional financial pressure for the family.
Fundraiser Launched to Help With Medical and Living Expenses
The fundraising appeal is intended to help the family meet medical expenses and other costs associated with their recovery.
Gibbs said donations would assist with everyday living expenses, travel, hospital-related costs and unexpected financial demands arising from the crash.
She said the aim was to allow the family to concentrate on supporting the injured child and recovering together without additional anxiety over their finances.
Eight Other Victims Reported in Stable Condition
Eight other people injured in the incident were reported to be in stable condition.
They included another five-year-old girl, a two-year-old girl and adults aged between 24 and 63.
The adult casualties were identified by age as a 31-year-old woman, a 48-year-old man, a 24-year-old man, a 63-year-old woman, a 25-year-old man and a 57-year-old man.
All 10 injured people were taken to John Hunter Hospital after receiving treatment from NSW Ambulance paramedics. Three were subsequently discharged.
Knights Fan Reveals Broken Collarbone
Among those injured was Newcastle Knights supporter Chris Clancy, who later shared an update from hospital saying he had suffered a broken left collarbone requiring surgery.
Clancy said he might also have suffered a sprain or fracture to his right foot.
He reported that two companions, Tom and Matt, had also been caught up in the incident. Tom suffered a graze to his elbow and was discharged, while Matt remained under observation with bruising and a graze to his back.
Several Newcastle players, including captain Kalyn Ponga, subsequently responded with messages of support.
Mayor Says Driver Was Also a Knights Supporter
Newcastle Lord Mayor Gavin Morris said the 18-year-old driver was himself a Knights supporter who had joined the celebrations.
According to Morris, the teenager appeared to have been revving the vehicle before losing control and entering the crowd.
Police have not suggested the incident was terrorism-related.
Investigators are continuing to establish exactly what occurred immediately before the BMW struck the supporters.
Crowd Turns on BMW Occupants After Crash
Video shared on social media showed the teenager being arrested as angry bystanders shouted towards him.
NSW Police Assistant Commissioner David Waddell said two other people who had been travelling inside the gold BMW had to be removed from the area after members of the crowd turned on them.
Waddell acknowledged there was considerable anger at the scene following the crash.
At the same time, he praised members of the public who immediately switched their attention to helping the injured, with some providing first aid and CPR before emergency crews took over.
Police Investigating Events Surrounding Driver’s Arrest
Police also intend to examine what happened between the crash and the driver’s arrest.
Asked whether members of the public had reached the teenager before officers did, Waddell said people in the crowd had come forward and investigators would examine whether any additional offences had occurred.
The driver was taken for mandatory drug and alcohol testing before being transferred to a police station, with police indicating that charges were likely.
Knights Procession Diverted Following Emergency
The incident caused major disruption to the Knights’ planned Grand Final send-off.
Newcastle Link Road was closed in both directions as police conducted inquiries and emergency personnel worked at the scene.
Authorities acknowledged that many supporters consequently missed the opportunity to see the team bus.
Police asked crowds to disperse safely and keep roads clear so emergency vehicles and traffic management crews could continue operating.
Newcastle Knights Send Support to Injured Fans
The Newcastle Knights said public safety had become the priority following the incident and apologised to supporters who missed the team’s bus because of the route change.
A club representative later said the thoughts of everyone associated with the Knights were with those injured, their families and people who witnessed the incident.
The club said it would make no further substantive comment while the matter remained under police investigation.
Ponga also issued a message expressing support for those affected and the wider Newcastle community.
Teammate Dane Gagai similarly said his thoughts and prayers were with the families impacted by the crash.
Police Minister Calls Crash a Preventable Tragedy
NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley described the incident as a “preventable tragedy” and used the crash to reinforce warnings about responsible behaviour behind the wheel.
Catley said authorities had already urged motorists to drive carefully amid the celebrations surrounding Newcastle’s Grand Final appearance.
She said a decision made in a matter of seconds could have devastating consequences.
Political Leaders Respond to Newcastle Tragedy
NSW Premier Chris Minns described the incident as heartbreaking and urged supporters travelling to Sydney for the Grand Final to take particular care on the roads.
Minns thanked police, paramedics and other emergency personnel involved in responding to the crash and expressed hope that Newcastle would remain united as those affected began their recovery.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he had discussed the incident with Minns and expressed concern for everyone injured or otherwise affected.
He noted that what should have been a weekend of excitement and pride for Newcastle rugby league supporters had instead been overshadowed by the crash.
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor also described the incident as devastating, expressing support for the injured and those assisting at the scene.
Investigation Continues as Two Victims Remain Critical
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the BMW entering the crowd, including the vehicle’s movements before the collision.
Authorities have said there is no indication the incident was terror-related.
For the families of the victims, however, attention has shifted from the excitement surrounding the Grand Final to the difficult recovery ahead, particularly for the five-year-old girl and 67-year-old man who remain critically injured.
