The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, says the company expects a major rise in revenue by June 2027 once it captures thousands of customers who are currently not being billed.
Appearing before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday, Mr Mutawakilu was asked by the committee’s chairperson, Abena Osei Asare, how much he thought GWL could add to the percentage of revenue it collects, and what the committee could do to help.
“I believe that by June next year, we should be able to add on about 100,” he said.
He explained that GWL’s records show about 73,000 commercial customers, though he believes the number could be higher because the data has yet to be fully examined. Only about 34,000 of them are billed, while 38,800 are not.
“So that means more than 50% of our commercial customers are unbilled. If we are able to capture them, you can imagine the revenue jump,” he said.
Mr Mutawakilu said that if each unbilled commercial customer, such as a hotel or restaurant, paid a minimum of GH¢1,000 a month, that would already amount to about GH¢38 million.
He added that more than 150,000 residential customers are also unbilled.
“We have over 150,000 who are unbilled…With the progress, the metering, ensuring that everybody is metered and paid the right water bill, that is a huge addition,” he said.
Mr Mutawakilu said his team is working hard to meter all of these customers.
