Police Officers In Meru Chased Away Trying To Rescue Suspected Phone Snatcher In Meru Town
Police officers in Meru were forced to scamper for safety on Saturday, October 10 after angry residents and traders lynched suspected thief in Makadara, Meru.
The suspected thief, identified only as Muteti, had reportedly become notorious in the town for allegedly snatching mobile phones from unsuspecting pedestrians and breaking into phone shops to steal valuables.
According to accounts from the incident, Muteti had been on the run following claims of repeated theft incidents that had left residents and business owners concerned about their safety and the security of their property.
The situation reportedly escalated on Saturday when angry residents and traders confronted the suspect, accusing him of engaging in criminal activities within the town.
As tensions rose, a crowd gathered around the suspect, with some residents allegedly taking matters into their own hands instead of allowing the police to handle the situation.
Patrol police officers who arrived at the scene reportedly attempted to rescue Muteti from the angry mob. However, their efforts were unsuccessful after some members of the crowd turned against them, forcing the officers to retreat for their own safety.
The confrontation took a tragic turn when the suspect was allegedly set on fire by members of the mob.
He reportedly suffered severe burns and was burnt beyond recognition as a large crowd gathered at the scene to witness the incident.
Despite the presence of the crowd, the situation remained tense, with the officers facing difficulties in restoring order as emotions ran high.
The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns about mob justice and the challenges faced by law enforcement officers when attempting to intervene in violent confrontations.
While residents may be frustrated by repeated cases of phone snatching and shop break-ins, the law requires suspects to be arrested, investigated and presented before a court of law rather than subjected to mob violence.
