ECG workers to embark on demo against planned privatisation

Workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are set to embark on a nationwide demonstration on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, to protest the proposed private sector participation (PSP) in the power distributor.

The protest, involving the Senior Staff Union (SSU) and Junior Staff Union (JSU), will take place across all ECG operational regions and end with the presentation of a petition to President John Dramani Mahama.

In a directive signed by SSU National Chairman Christopher Apawu and his JSU counterpart, Lucky Larry Agboka, divisional and branch leaders have been instructed to mobilise members for the exercise.

The petition will be submitted to regional ministers in the various operational areas for onward transmission to the President.

The demonstration is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

In Accra, participants will converge at the forecourt of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), while Kumasi-based workers will assemble at the ECG Regional Office near the Airport Roundabout.

Workers in other regions will gather at their respective ECG regional offices, with the routes to be announced subsequently.

After marching, participants will return to their designated assembly points for a briefing before bringing the exercise to an end.

The planned protest is the latest phase of industrial action announced by the unions earlier this month as they step up opposition to the proposed PSP arrangement.

As part of the ongoing action, ECG workers will continue wearing red armbands until the unions announce the next phase.

The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU), which is coordinating the demonstration, will lead the nationwide exercise.

The unions said PUWU has also notified the Inspector General of Police of the planned demonstration in line with Section 1(2) of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).

National and regional committees are expected to coordinate the protest, with further arrangements to be communicated to workers through the relevant structures.
