Live-action Cyberpunk 2077 movie in the works
The live-action film may not be a like-for-like retelling of V's story in Cyberpunk 2077.
We can now add Cyberpunk 2077 to the growing list of video games that Hollywood is looking to mine for content.
The game, which released in late 2020 and is originally based on a tabletop experience, is said to be getting a live-action adaptation, according to Deadline.
The publication notes that Paramount Pictures is the studio developing it, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura attached as one of the key producers for the project. His past efforts leaning heavily on pop culture include some of the Transformers and G.I. Joe films, so he does have a slightly mixed bag in terms of box office successes.
Thankfully CD Projekt RED, the Polish game developer behind the title, is also working on the live-action film’s development, with it proving a critical piece of how the animated Netflix series, Cyberpunk Edgerunners has performed.
At the time of writing, it is still unclear whether this film will indeed get off the ground, as Paramount Pictures is now a part of the recently form Skydance company, following a merger involving Warner Bros. Discovery in a blockbuster deal.
It is also unclear what story the film would focus on, as the title centres around V and Johnny Silverhand as they navigate the brutal world of Night City and a deus ex machina-esque element that runs throughout the main line of the game.
With players capable of picking from three different origins for V at the beginning of the game, selecting one might prove difficult, potentially alienating a group of players who may prefer one back story over another.
That said, the world of Cyberpunk 2077 is rich in stories to tell, and while the setting of Night City remains, there could be several different avenues that the producers could take.
We mentioned Edgerunners earlier, and that was able to expertly tell a wholly new story separate from that of V. So much so, that its second season is landing soon on Netflix.
Either way, it will be interesting to see which direction the producers take things, and we would not be lying by saying that we want to see a live-action version of Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand featuring somewhere.
For now, no timeline has been mentioned for this project to kick off.
