DJ Black Coffee, whose company Soulistic Music secured a R7 million judgment against Maserati SA in a dispute over a customised vehicle.

Black Coffee's plan to upgrade his R7 million Maserati to a R9m model has ended in a court battle, with a sheriff now authorised to attach assets belonging to Maserati SA.
The move follows a Johannesburg High Court order in favour of the Grammy Award-winning DJ's company, Soulistic Music, after a dispute over a customised Maserati MC20 Cielo.
Black Coffee, whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, already owned an M20 Coupé when he struck a deal to upgrade to the more expensive Cielo.
His existing car was valued at R7m as part of the transaction, with a further R2m to be paid for the new vehicle. But the deal turned sour when the Cielo was supposed to be delivered.
Soulistic maintained that Maserati SA had failed to deliver the luxury vehicle within the agreed period and Maphumulo eventually cancelled the deal and demanded the R7m back.
Maserati disputed his version of the delivery agreement. The company maintained that a customised Cielo takes months to produce once specifications are finalised and argued that some of Black Coffee's requested customisations had still not been confirmed.
The dispute went to the Johannesburg High Court, where Acting Judge Sanet van Aswegen granted summary judgment in favour of Soulistic on August 3, 2026.
Maserati was ordered to pay R7m, together with interest and legal costs. The matter moved into enforcement proceedings when a writ of execution was issued on August 17, 2026.
A writ of execution issued on August 17 has now escalated the legal victory into direct enforcement. The amount being pursued is R7.735m, comprising the R7 million judgment debt and R735,000 in interest calculated at 10.5% a year.
The writ authorises the sheriff to identify and attach movable property belonging to Casa Vehicle Holdings, which trades as Maserati SA, if the judgment remains unpaid. Attached property can ultimately be sold to recover the debt.
There has been no confirmation that any of Maserati SA’s vehicles or other assets have yet been attached.
