Teachers’ strike continues after talks with gov’t end inconclusively

The leadership of the three teacher unions say their strike is still in force after a meeting with government on Friday, October 2, ended without a resolution.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah said government had put forward new proposals and the unions will need to meet and discuss them.

PRETAG President King Ali Awudu said the unions will study the proposals, weigh their pros and cons, and go back to the government team on Monday but till then, the strike continues.

“Teachers are hereby informed that the strike action is still in force and that we will revert to the government team on Monday based on the proposals they have made. We are going to do necessary consultations, do the plus and minuses on the various proposals they have made and revert on Monday.”

He told teachers not to go to the classroom until they hear from the leadership on or after Monday, October 5, 2026.

Mr Awudu said teachers who want to mark World Teachers Day, which also falls on Monday, are free to do so, but should still stay out of the classroom.

When a journalist asked if the unions were boycotting the day, they said no.

Mr Musah said the unions have already issued a statement asking all teachers to take part in the celebrations.

“We have issued a statement to all teachers to get involved…Coming Monday, it will be our 60th anniversary as teachers and therefore we call on all teachers to participate in the celebration of October 5th. But the strike remains,” he noted.

The strike by GNAT, NAGRAT and PRETAG began on Friday, September 25, over promotion arrears, the Collective Agreement and the 20% Deprived Area Allowance.
