Two suspected murderers were apprehended following a high-speed chase with Metro Police officers in Seawinds on Friday, 9 October, Cape {town} Etc reports.
This incident was just one part of a broader crackdown on crime, as a total of 474 suspects were arrested by various City enforcement departments during the preceding week.
The chase began after Metro Police were alerted at 09:25 about a shooting in Cafda. Officers were provided with a description of a white Chevrolet believed to be linked to the incident. The vehicle was spotted driving along Military Road, prompting officers to give chase.
After travelling through the streets of Capricorn, the suspects brought the vehicle to a halt in Seawinds. During the apprehension, three occupants attempted to make a run for it, but officers successfully arrested two individuals.
Upon investigating the vehicle, law enforcement officials recovered two firearms alongside 11 live rounds of ammunition stored in a magazine. The Chevrolet was reported hijacked during a shooting incident on Ensor Road, which had resulted in the tragic deaths of two individuals.
The suspects now face serious charges, including the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as reckless and negligent driving, and they have been remanded at Steenberg SAPS for further investigation.
Mayco for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith commended the swift actions of the officers, noting, ‘The officers’ swift response resulted in the arrest of two murder suspects who at that time were also putting the lives of others on the road at risk. Whether it is taking criminals or illegal weapons out of circulation, our officers will continue to make our streets safer,’
Smith further underlined the need for more thorough investigative powers to ensure that offenders face the full consequences of their actions, stating, ‘We will not stop the call for a devolution of investigation and forensic powers. It will ensure these criminals are prosecuted to the full extent of the law and do not keep returning to create chaos in our communities,’
The recent enforcement efforts have yielded significant results. During the past week alone, Metro Police officers arrested 120 suspects, recovered nine hijacked or stolen vehicles, seized six prohibited firearms, and issued a staggering 6,856 fines for various violations.
Law Enforcement officers nabbed 297 individuals and issued 13,263 notices across different infractions. Traffic Officers also made 57 arrests, with 48 related to drunk driving and eight for reckless and negligent driving, while they executed 1,974 warrants, impounded 148 public transport vehicles, and handed out 56,353 fines.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) reported a total of 3,238 calls received, which included 175 incidents of physical assault, 95 domestic violence cases, and 126 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents. Noise nuisance complaints accounted for 522 of the calls received.
Residents are encouraged to report any incidents, emergencies, or suspicious activities by contacting the PECC at 021 480 7700 or using the Safety and Security feature on the City App to log by-law and traffic-related complaints.
