Kasoa Old Market Women Spread Wrappers on the Ground to Welcome Hawa Koomson

Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, received a warm reception from women at the Kasoa Old Market, where some traders laid their wrappers on the ground for her to walk on during her visit.

The gesture formed part of the welcome extended to the former legislator as she interacted with the market women, with the traders expressing their excitement through a traditional display of appreciation and respect.

Laying cloth or wrappers on the ground for a visitor to walk on is a symbolic gesture that can be used in some Ghanaian communities to demonstrate honour, admiration and a special welcome, particularly when the person being received is regarded as an important guest.

The market women’s actions therefore provided a notable moment during Hawa Koomson’s visit, as traders gathered to receive her and show their appreciation for her presence at the busy trading centre.

Kasoa Old Market serves as a commercial hub for traders who sell a variety of goods and supplies to residents and customers from surrounding communities, making interactions with market women an important part of engagement with the local trading population.

During visits of this nature, traders often have the opportunity to interact with public figures, share their experiences and express their views on issues affecting their livelihoods and businesses.

Hawa Koomson is known for her involvement in Ghanaian politics and previously represented the Awutu Senya East Constituency in Parliament, where she served as a representative of the area before leaving the legislature.

Her visit to the market provided an opportunity to connect with traders in the constituency and meet women whose daily activities contribute to commerce and economic life in the area.

Women play a significant role in Ghana’s informal economy, particularly in markets where they engage in retail trading, food sales and other commercial activities that support their households and provide goods to the public.

The reception at Kasoa Old Market highlighted the warm welcome the traders chose to give the former legislator, with the laying of wrappers on the ground serving as the most striking part of the occasion.

The gesture added a traditional touch to the visit and reflected the traders’ willingness to go beyond an ordinary greeting to demonstrate their welcome to Hawa Koomson.
