Ndidi and Olaitan score as 10-man Beşiktaş hold Crystal Palace in Europa League thriller

Ndidi opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time before Crystal Palace struck twice after the break to take control of the contest. Substitute Olaitan restored parity in the 73rd minute, helping the Turkish side earn a point despite playing the closing stages with 10 men.

The match was played at Tüpraş Stadium in Istanbul, where both African midfielders made decisive contributions in an entertaining European encounter.

Ndidi gave the hosts the breakthrough in the 45th minute, finishing a move created by fellow midfielder Salih Özcan.

The Super Eagles captain made a well-timed run into the penalty area before controlling the pass and sending a left-footed effort beyond Crystal Palace goalkeeper Walter Benítez.

His goal rewarded Beşiktaş for their efforts in a closely contested first half and gave the home side a 1–0 advantage at the interval.

The Nigerian midfielder’s contribution was particularly important as Beşiktaş looked to maintain their momentum in the league phase of the competition.

Crystal Palace responded strongly after the restart and drew level in the 51st minute through Yéremy Pino, who finished after receiving a cross from Anan Khalaili.

The visitors then completed the turnaround four minutes later. Jean-Philippe Mateta capitalised on a defensive error before finishing to put Palace 2–1 ahead.

Having surrendered their lead, Beşiktaş needed a response to avoid leaving the contest empty-handed.

The Benin international scored in the 73rd minute to make it 2–2, restoring belief among the home supporters and giving the hosts renewed hope of claiming victory.

However, the contest took another turn four minutes later when Beşiktaş defender Ümit Akdağ was sent off in the 77th minute.

Reduced to 10 players, the Turkish side faced increased pressure as Crystal Palace searched for a late winner.

Beşiktaş remained organised defensively and held on until the final whistle to secure a share of the points.

Ndidi’s goal highlighted his importance to Beşiktaş in midfield, while Olaitan demonstrated his value as an attacking option by delivering a crucial equaliser from the bench.

Their contributions ensured that Beşiktaş recovered from a second-half collapse to take a point against Premier League opposition.

The result provided another notable moment for African players in European competition, with the Nigerian and Beninese internationals both finding the net on a memorable night in Istanbul.
