Reigning Miss Malawi Thandi Chisi has stepped back into the public eye, but her latest appearance has raised more questions than it answered.
Chisi was on Sunday at Bingu National Stadium, where she presented the Airtel Cup after Ekhaya FC stunned Mighty Wanderers 2-1 in the Airtel Top 8 final.
Her appearance comes amid controversy over Malawi’s representation at the ongoing Miss World competition, with attention now turning to one conspicuous detail, the crown was nowhere to be seen.
Chisi appeared without her Miss Malawi crown as she handed over the trophy to the winners.
The development comes against the backdrop of the controversy surrounding Malawi’s representation at Miss World, where Miss Malawi first runner-up Ireen Navicha is representing the country.
Weeks ago, Speaking to Malawi24, Miss Malawi Organisation Chief Operations Officer Godfrey Kambewa told Malawi24 that Navicha did not take the crown used by Chisi when she won the Miss Malawi title.
According to Kambewa, the organisation have duplicate crowns and provided Navicha with one for her Miss World appearance.
“The organization owns three identical crowns purchased as backups. Chisi has retained her Miss Malawi crown, while Navicha was presented with another identical crown to wear as Malawi’s representative at Miss World” said Kambewa.
That explanation has now raised another question: If duplicate crowns are available, why did Chisi not wear hers at Sunday’s Airtel Cup final
Her decision not to appear with the crown has already attracted attention and speculation, particularly because this was her first major public appearance since the Miss World controversy gained widespread attention.
However, neither Chisi nor the Miss Malawi organizers have publicly explained why she appeared without the crown.
It remains unclear whether the decision was simply because of the nature of the football event, a personal choice by Chisi, or whether there are other circumstances surrounding the Miss Malawi title.
