Political analyst Dr Maloba has weighed in on the possible consequences of a political alliance between Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as opposition leaders intensify their engagements ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The discussion comes amid growing efforts by opposition politicians to establish a common political front to challenge President William Ruto in the next presidential election.
On October 20, Gachagua hosted Sifuna and several leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County. Their meeting sparked fresh debate about the possibility of cooperation between Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and Sifuna’s political camp.
Maloba’s analysis centres on what could happen if the emerging political relationship expands to include Kalonzo, potentially bringing together leaders with different regional constituencies and political networks.
Gachagua has maintained a strong political presence in the Mt Kenya region, while Kalonzo commands an established following in Ukambani. Sifuna, meanwhile, has become a prominent figure in the Linda Mwananchi movement, which is seeking to strengthen its national political influence.
If these leaders reach an agreement, their cooperation could reshape opposition mobilisation and intensify competition for voters who supported Ruto in the 2022 General Election.
The latest developments suggest that discussions are moving beyond speculation. DCP deputy leader Cleophas Malala announced plans to meet Kalonzo on Monday, October 26, to persuade him to support Sifuna’s presidential ambitions. However, the opposition has yet to settle on a joint presidential candidate.
Despite the emerging cooperation, significant challenges remain, particularly over leadership, the presidential ticket and how the different political camps would share responsibilities within a coalition.
For Ruto, the potential alliance presents another development in the evolving political contest ahead of 2027.
Nevertheless, whether such unity would substantially reduce his support remains uncertain. The outcome will depend on the leaders’ ability to agree on a common strategy and translate their political influence into support at the ballot.
As consultations continue, Kenyans will be watching to see whether Kalonzo, Sifuna and Gachagua can overcome their differences and establish a united opposition front.
