Man killed after dropping child at Heatherdale Primary School

A 31-year-old Athlone man was shot dead in his vehicle on Belgravia Road, after reportedly dropping his child at school on Tuesday morning, Cape {town} Etc reports.

The shooting happened outside Heatherdale Primary School as children were returning to class after the holidays. The location and timing have brought a disturbing dimension to the incident, with the attack unfolding close to a primary school during the morning rush.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel F.C Van Wyk told Cape {town} Etc, ‘The man sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his face and upper body.’

Police believe the shooting may be gang-related, although no further details about the circumstances or possible motive have been released. No arrests have been made. Athlone police have opened a murder case and are investigating the fatal shooting.

The incident may raise concern among parents and members of the school community, given that it occurred outside Heatherdale Primary while learners were returning to class. SAPS has not indicated that the school or pupils were directly targeted.

The incident follows a September shooting reported near Cloetesville High** School in Stellenbosch**, where police said no injuries were reported and no learners were involved.
