President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to protecting human rights in Malawi.
He made the commitment on Friday at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe during a farewell meeting with outgoing Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) Commissioners, whose three-year terms have ended.
President Mutharika acknowledged the work done by the Commissioners over the past three years in protecting the rights of women, children and the elderly, as well as promoting access to information.
He also recognised the challenges facing the Commission, particularly financial constraints that have affected its operations over the years.
Mutharika pledged his government’s support to the Commission as it continues with its mandate of promoting and protecting human rights in the country.
Speaking after the meeting, outgoing MHRC Commissioner Chikondi Chijozi Jere said the engagement provided an opportunity for the Commissioners to brief the President on the work they had undertaken, the challenges faced by the Commission and its outlook for the future.
The Commissioners concluded their three-year mandate on August 26, 2026.
