Former National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah says he is disappointed by his suspension but insists he remains calm as investigations continue into allegations surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup visa process.
President John Dramani Mahama suspended Mr Ampofo Ankrah on Thursday, 1 October, following allegations of his involvement in a visa facilitation arrangement linked to the tournament.
The controversy centres on claims that about US$623,000 was received from prospective travellers seeking assistance with visa applications and travel arrangements for the World Cup.
Speaking to JoySports after his suspension, Mr Ampofo Ankrah said he was disappointed that he had not been given an opportunity to fully explain his side of the matter.
“I’m still calm, a bit disappointed,” he said.
“I’m not one to rant and rage. I’m disappointed that I’ve not been heard. It is disappointing that we haven’t been able to have a discussion as to exactly what the situation is.”
Mr Ampofo Ankrah said his attention before his suspension had been focused on preparing the Accra Sports Stadium and other facilities under the NSA for upcoming national assignments.
The Accra Sports Stadium is among the key venues being prepared for national team activities, including matches involving the Black Stars.
“I’ve been focused on preparing the facility, Accra Sports Stadium, and other areas around the National Sports Authority to get ready for the Black Stars and other national assignments,” he said.
His suspension comes as scrutiny intensifies over the handling of World Cup-related visa and travel arrangements, with the allegations prompting calls for investigations into the matter.
Following his removal, Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong was appointed Acting Director-General of the NSA.
