Damang Gold Mine Airport Project to Cost at Least $80 Million, Ramy Oboro Reveals
The planned airport project at Damang Gold Mine in Ghana’s Western Region is expected to cost at least $80 million to complete, according to Ramy Oboro, the mine’s Community Relations Manager.
Oboro disclosed the estimated cost while speaking on a special edition of Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme in Tarkwa on Thursday, October 22, 2026. He explained that the amount would cover the two phases of work required to prepare the land and make the proposed airport operational.
According to him, the project involves more than levelling the land, as additional infrastructure, equipment and electrical installations will be required before the facility can be used.
“It is anticipated that when we are done with the airport, it is going to cost us not less than 80 million dollars, both Phase One and Phase Two,” Oboro said.
He added that the final expenditure could exceed the initial estimate because of the scale of the project and the facilities needed to support its operations.
“I think it will even go beyond that,” he stated.
Oboro explained that Phase One of the project would focus on levelling and preparing the land for construction.
Phase Two would involve developing the supporting infrastructure and installing the equipment required for the airport’s operations. These include electrical systems and signal-receiving equipment necessary for the facility to function.
The two phases are expected to form the foundation for establishing an airport that could improve access to Damang and surrounding communities.
The proposed airport forms part of a broader development agenda announced by Ibrahim Mahama, Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners, following the company’s takeover of Damang Gold Mine.
During the mine’s handover ceremony in April 2026, Mahama outlined plans to invest in infrastructure aimed at improving transportation, healthcare and other social amenities in the mining enclave.
He previously indicated that the company intended to establish an airport to make travel between Damang and Accra easier.
The project is expected to improve connectivity and could support business activities and movement within the region if successfully completed.
Damang Gold Mine was previously operated by Gold Fields Ghana Limited before the concession was awarded to Engineers and Planners following a competitive bidding process.
The handover took place on April 18, 2026, under the supervision of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah.
The transition marked a new phase in the management of the mine, with expectations that the new operator would sustain mining operations while supporting economic and infrastructure development in surrounding communities.
