Gold Fields Ghana Foundation Constructs 40k Litre Water Project For Brahabobom

For residents of Brahabobom in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality, the sound of water flowing from a tap represents more than a new piece of infrastructure.

It signals relief from a long-standing challenge and the prospect of a healthier and more dignified way of life.

The community’s struggle for reliable access to potable water has received a major boost following the completion and handing over of a Small-Town Water Supply System (STWSS) financed by the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, in partnership with the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly (TNMA).

The facility, handed over on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 is expected to improve access to safe and reliable water for households and residents of Brahabobom, while reducing the burden associated with fetching water.

At the heart of the project is a 40,000-litre water storage system, supported by two mechanised boreholes and four standpipes.

Constructed at a cost of GH¢616,858.39, the system is designed to provide a sustainable source of clean water for drinking, cooking, sanitation and other domestic purposes.

For the Chief of Brahabobom, Nana Kwesi Ansah, the facility has arrived at a particularly important time for the community.”

Access to potable water has been a major challenge for our people, and this facility has come at a very important time,” he said.

According to him, the project would not only make water more accessible, but also contribute to improved health and hygiene among residents.

He expressed gratitude to the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly and other stakeholders whose collaboration made the project possible.

But Nana Ansah also recognised that the completion of the project marked the beginning of another responsibility, ensuring that the facility remained functional for years to come.

“As a community, we pledge to take ownership of the facility, use it responsibly and ensure that it is properly maintained for the benefit of present and future generations,” he said.

Project Manager, Sandra Deladem Woanyah, for her part stated that the implementation of the water project forms part of the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation’s broader efforts to support essential infrastructure and improve living conditions in its host communities.

The Brahabobom project also reflects the importance of partnerships between mining companies, local authorities and beneficiary communities in addressing basic social needs.

For the community, however, the statistics surrounding the project may matter less than the simple availability of water when it is needed.

A 40,000-litre storage facility, two mechanised boreholes and four standpipes have effectively transformed what was previously a major community challenge into an infrastructure that residents can now manage collectively.

The project also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 6 on Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-being, and SDG 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities.

As the taps begin to serve households across Brahabobom, the real measure of the project’s success will ultimately be seen in the everyday lives of residents in cleaner homes, improved sanitation, reduced hardship and the assurance that access to safe water is no longer an uncertain part of daily life.
